Hypocrisy has become a way of life in modern times. In fact the Young are rewarded for it in terms of their rap music. It's everywhere. There is too much of an emphasis and value put to all the wrong things. People will and do lie, steal and cheat to gain material goods. They will not do the same to get an education or to discover the answer to a question about truth. I do not know. Nor can I tell you in my little bit of knowledge about this world the why of things. For the answer is infinite. I can say, that it is certainly a disturbing phenomenon. It's all but next to impossible to find somebody who "walks it like they talk it.' And we all know, that we could take every clock in the world and put it in a sack and sink it in the deepest part of the ocean. And time will keep right on ticking all the same.

1. Appearance is becoming more important, and depth and strength of character is conversely becoming weaker. My point here is that people often denounce/support things for the sole purpose of making themselves look better. For example, many people denounce the war in Iraq without knowing the details behind it, just as many people support it without knowing why. Why do they do this? Oftentimes, it's to make themselves look more rebellious, or more intelligent, or more trustworthy, or more patriotic, etc.
2. The world is moving at faster rate than it ever has. The fact that most people involve themselves in more and more relationships means that particular relationships become less and less valuable. I mean, if you ruin a relationship, you can always just "move on to somebody new," right?
This means people can say and do virtually anything (within the limits of the law, of course) without many social consequences. A big contrast to witch-burnings and the like.

You put these two together and what do you get? People who denounce things for the sake of appearance and then don't care enough about their personal character to stand by their own ideas. It's what society has come to.

Well, since "hypocrisy" comes from an ancient Greek word, I'd say hypocrites have been around a very long time.

Because it takes courage and strength to be yourself. It is much easier to wear a mask and not be true or sincere. The world we live in is very superficial and therefore it is very difficult to be oneself and stand for who we really are. Most people prefer being like others and acting with hypocrisy. Unfortunately it is very difficult to find sincerity around us.

To build a strong self and social image so that it leads to success in their life. They don't need permanent and trustworthy relations with anyone. So build a relation till you achieve your goal and cold shoulder the same when it is achieved.
Today's world is being filled with selfish self centred individuals who to achieve name and fame in a jiffy will fake anything to achieve the same.

because that's just how it is.
the world is full of sin, lies and deceit. people are imperfect.
some really try to be good people but circumstances wont allow, and some are really not good. just remember this: people are like songs. there are a lot of songs that suck, a few that are good and very few great ones.
you just have to pick the songs you like.
