This is a part of a plant my neighbor gave to me last year. I have managed to keep it alive, though it has not gotten much bigger since she gave it to me. I thought it might be a hosta but when I looked it up online, it does not look like what I saw. Then my grandmother told me she thought it was a dumb cane. I looked it up and still don;t think it looks like what I have. Can anyone look at this picture and please tell me what it is, and what I can do to make it grow bigger, or fuller or something. I have tried Miracle grow, different fertilizer, but what you see is what you get. Click here to see the plant;

It is some type of bamboo but I don't know which kind. There are at least 50 kinds and probably a lot more. Some are very small and there are other types that grow large enough to make furniture. The larger type was used in Vietnam by the North Vietnamese to make a trap that would go through an ordinary shoe and could cripple a soldier or anyone unlucky enough to step on the trap they made.

It is a dumb cane. They tend to grow slowly, so be patient. They need medium light and water. I have had some that I cut down because they were reaching close to the ceiling, but that was after many years!

At first I thought it might be some kind of philodendron, but I think your grandma is right. It looks like a variety of dieffenbachia (dumb cane) and yeah, they can be a pain to try to propogate and get to thrive. It sounds like you've tried what I would have suggested, so good luck as you keep it alive.

i think it might be an elephant ear... my mom loves those plants (and so do i for some reason)... they are really pretty and don't really require a lot of maintenance.... too much sun can dry them out so make sure you put it where the sun comes and goes... make sure to water it at least twice a week... why it hasn't grown since last year, i don't know why, but i'll ask my mom & see what she's done to make hers so pretty... p.s i'll try to take a picture of hers the next time i'm at her house so you can see the outcome of this plant...

I am not sure how you spell it, but if vaugly resembles a philadendrum. Although the ones we have do not have a stalk like that, they are much more viney. However if ours were in a bigger pot maybe.
Sorry though not sure of what that is since our plant grows like a mad house with nothing but water.

The leaves really look like it could be a hosta, but the stem is way too long. Why don't you ask your neighbor what it is?

looks like bamboo to me. take it out of the pot and lay it flat. then cover it with dirt. it will sprout a few more of them. that stuff grows pretty fast in the ground.

http://www.gflora.com/index.php?cmd=genus Try here. I've had one before but can't for the life of me remember the name. It's common and can find in nurseries. Would check it out for you but can't right now.
