the answers to my question so far don't help because there are no #s next to the oil fill. again it's a Honda Shadow VLX 600. How much oil do i put in it? I didn't recieve a manual when i bought it.

Either purchase a shop manual

Or buy 4 quarts and fill the crankcase to the top line of the dip stick, the way you're supposed to.
Check the oil level with the bike standing straight up and down (as if you were sitting on it).
Check the oil level with the dip stick resting on the hole (not screwed in).
Fill it 1/2 qt at a time and check the oil level (the correct level is up to the top line of the dip stick).
When you get to the top line, screw the dip stick in all the way.
Start and run the bike for a few minutes (this gets the oil circulated throughout the engine and fills the oil filter).
Turn off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes (this lets the oil in the top of the engine drain back down to the crankcase.
Re-check the oil level and add as necessary.

The owners manual for the 2006, Honda Shadow VLX/Deluxe refrences (approximately) 2.38 qts. (2.25L) with a new oil filter.

3 Qts. if you change the filter at the same time add .5 more Qts

my VLX 400 uses 2.75cc of oil when i change the filter, 2.25cc when i don't change the filter... 3.1cc when you clean/open the whole engine...
