I went out and bought the poles and now I have to decide how far apart to put them and which direction. I just wondered what your opinion is on this one?

I am putting clothes line poles up to do my part to conserve energy and not run my dryer. I live in rural America.

I can see advantages to both directions. The wind usually blows from the South in the summer, so run it east to west. And the sun shines from the east and west, so run it north and south. But the improtant things may be to just keep it out of the shade and out from under any bird roosts. As far as length, it depends on how much line you need to hang everything. If you can run four lines you won't need as much. If you need more length, use coated wire instead of cord and you can put more tension on it to hold up the load. Just don't exceed the holding strength of the poles themselves, usually they have guide wires going out behind them for more strength.

One other option would have been the "tree" kind of clothes dryer (square design with several lines and mounted on a center pole) then it wouldn't matter about direction and would take up less room.

place the clothes line wherever it fits and is convenient. there really is no rule. just as long as the poles are placed in a way that the clothesline is a line. so, north-west or south-east wouldn't really work. you're on the right track with either north-south or east-west.

If you know which way the breeze blows, put up the poles so the line runs the opposite way. That way your clothing, etc. will catch the breeze, dry faster, and not so likely to get twisted up.
