I am making my "baby's 1st yr" photo frame with a white felt like cloth as a background. I need to write down the months under each photo. What is the best way to do that? I tried using a marker, but it blotches...i mean the ink spreads. I tried using a paper under each pic but that does not look great with the fabric. Any ideas, tips?

I just had a similar project for my son. Felt is horrible.fabric markers and puffy paint won't work and will look messy. My plan was to iron on letters with printer iron-on paper. That didn't work either. I bought sticker alphabet that was on clear acetate at Target. They'll have it at any craft store or place where people do scrapbooking. It looked cheap though. I supposed if you had the letters squished under the glass it may work. Mine was just a banner. Without seeing your project but knowing what you mean about the felt..Ideas.. can you use a different fabric all together? Can you put the photo in a small mat then on the felt. that way you can write on the mat. That may require re-sizing the photos. Can you get the words on a different fabric small swatch( Iron -on transfer paper that goes thru your printer or even fabric that can go thru a printer is available..iron on at Staples ..just make sure you print your letters reverse..fabric printer i had to order online..Fabric Sheet by Canon.(I was making dolls with my kids faces on them for their friends who were moving away..too much info I know..avoiding dishes!) )Then stitch it onto felt. As for writing on the felt..I don't know. Oh..last idea if you are hanging,,how about writing on a ribbon and using the ribbon as a decorative way to hang?

Yes, besides all of the fabric pens etc. you might consider getting the letters embroidered if you want it to last for a long time. They use a stabilizer under the silk so the fabric is not damaged. Also, you may be able to find a t-shirt type shop that will either silk screen or direct print the words onto your fabric. Use these ideas if you really want the words/ pictures to last for years.

There are many fabric markers in craft and fabric stores. They also come in a variety of colors. Some required some heat set and with felt you need to be careful not to get it too hot. You could also try fabric paint with a very fine tip.

Pigma pens are the best for writing on fabric.....come in lots of colors, have thin tips, are permanent and don't run.....problem, with "felt like" fabric, you will have trouble getting anything to write well on that. Thought of changing the background fabric to something with a smooth weave, like cotton?

go to AC More, Michaels, Joanne Fabrics or any craft store and buy fabric paint. I can't remember the name of it, but there is a fabric paint pen. Last time I bought one it was like 2 dollars per pen so i bought every color and I use them for everything. Anyway, you can find it at any craft store, you just have to look.

You could try a fabric paint pen, found at any hobby and craft strore. But, felt is really difficult to write on, and will most likely bleed no matter what.

Puff paint would work pretty well because it won't soak in.
