Um, logically, the USA has to be destroyed first since it is part of the Earth! The only other option is that they are destroyed at the same time.

Probably the US from political change or war, but, let's talk impacts - since this IS Astronomy/Space...

An asteroid in the <10m size range would cause a hole in the ground and small ejecta up to 1Km away.

A small asteroid impact (10m to 100m diameter) would tear up the local area. If it hit in California or in the central US it might trigger earthquakes.

A medium size (100m to 1 Km) would devastate the area for about 50 - 500 miles around. In the central US or California it would cause earthquakes, because the local faults would slip due to the T and P waves generated by the impact. If this impacted off of one of the coasts of the US it would cause a sizeable tsunami, washing inland for many miles.

A large asteroid (1Km to about 5 Km) impacting in the center of the continental US would throw debris to both coasts, and would probably cause the San Andreas fault to slip as well, possibly triggering all of the faluts in the continental US. The dust ejected into the upper atmosphere would prevent crop germination for 1 to 5 years. If it was a costal impact, the tsumami would wash up to the closest mountain range, leveling the coastal area. A Gulf of Mexico impact might even flood Chicago, Illinois.

A global killer (> 5Km) would be exactly that. All life would be extinguished, except for some bacteria in the deep ocean trenches.

Why would the US be destroyed and not the earth - your question is in Astronomy and Space so you must be thinking of some cosmic or astronomical catastrophe, and that would affect the entire Earth (the US isn't the only country on Earth).

But if a small asteroid were to strike the central US, the US would sustain the most damage, but everywhere else on Earth would be damaged as well from dust in the atmosphere cutting off sunlight, etc.

The United States was destroyed the minute Bush was elected President for those $326 "tax rebate" bribes. The people irresponsibily threw it away and now China owns the mortagage. The planet goes on quite nicely, though, aside from a few glaciers here and there. We humans will just have to adapt to the dramatic, impending biospheric changes upon us. And, we shall.

Most likely the United States will be destroyed first in November of year 2008, or shortly thereafter, when Hillary
Clinton is elected President of the United States by a bunch
of people who simply don't like Geroge Bush.
