My 10 year old daughter goes to visit my mom every summer and christmas and loves vegas. There are the dolphins, tigers, pirates, etc on the strip, but there is so much more. Most hotel have fun pools that can entertain for hours, and kids love the changing lights in the Forum. Some shows are kid-friendly (Cirque de Soliel, Mamma Mia). Also they have bowling, ice-skating, Old Nevada, Red Rock Canyon, the new preserve, a great planetarium, a children's discovery museum, UNLV does great theater in the park, the Nevada Ballet has wonderful performances, etc. Nevada Southern Railroad even has a Thomas train you can ride on.
Try gocitykids.com for activities and events while you are there, plus kid-friendly dining, etc.
Except for the hotel shows, things are relatively inexpensive.

Stay away from the actual casino area (you can walk through them as long as you stay on the walkway). The Palms has an excellent pool that you can sneak into very easily. You would probably like Caesars Palace as there's plenty to walk around and see (mall etc inside). The Fashion Show Mall on the strip is a great huge mall and features actual fashion shows you can go check out for free. If you like Star Trek then there's tons to see at the Hilton by the Convention Center as it's all Star Trek themed. MGM has white tigers and the Rainforest Cafe. The Coke store(the huge coke bottle on the strip) has a "sodas from around the world" tasting that is pretty fun. ESPN zone has a huge arcade. Circus Circus has an indoor amusement park. New York New York has a huge roller coaster going around the entire casino. Stratesphere is cool to go up and check out the entire city from so high as well as amusement style rides on the top of it.

I lived in Vegas for the last two years. No way I would ever take my kids there. As someone before me mentioned, LV has moved away from catering to families. Now it's all about adult fun. The previous poster said something about the "pirates." Well, that's a perfect example. Treasure Island revamped the Pirate show. Now there are nothing but strippers dancing. They call them the Sirens of TI. I'm not making that up either.
Vegas sucks if your a teenager.

Scooter obviously hasn't been to Vegas in the last five years - it's not a family town any longer. They tried that and it didn't work, so Vegas is back to catering to the affulent adults. The water park is gone. MGM Grand closed their amusement park. The only "kid friendly" places are Excalibur and Circus Circus - and if you're over 12, they're kinda lame.
Prices for what? Compared to where? Compared to NYC, they're a little cheaper for somethings, about the same in others. Compared to a teeny town in Idaho or something? They're going to be expensive.

I live in Vegas. It is not a place for kids unless you want to prematurely expose them to gambling..
There are day trips away from Vegas that would be educational for older kids..Zion National Park, Valley of Fire, Grand Canyon is 6 hour drive away and is a destination in itself.
