An active X is a type of script used on web pages- especially if there is an interactive part. Without the active X required, you may have some trouble loading the page. What I do is I let my computer download the script- however, active X script is sometimes malicious. Just use good common sense.

I have an active X..... She was first my active wife. .......Now she's being active in someone else's life..........I knew I probably shouldn't..........I knew that she was bad.....The only problem is........She was the best I ever had..
But seriously folks, active X is not something you want to get rid of. What the popup is telling you is that the web page you are trying to view requires Active X. Use your browser to locate a free download of ActiveX and install it on your computer. That will take care of the problem.

An ActiveX control is a set of rules for how applications should share information. An ActiveX control is similar to a Java applet. Unlike Java applets, however, ActiveX controls have full access to the Windows operating system. This gives them much more power than Java applets, but with this power comes a certain risk that the applet may damage software or data on your machine. To control this risk, Microsoft developed a registration system so that browsers can identify and authenticate an ActiveX control before downloading it. to get rid of it simply click on the x sign.

You need to install the Active X control to view whatever you are trying to view. So, if there is something you are trying to do that you can't, you need to click on the yellow bar appearing at the top of the page, and click install active x control. If you don't need it and don't know why it's popping up, try right clicking on it, or left clicking and seeing if you can deny, do not install, or any other options pertaining to your goal of not wanting it to come up, Otherwise you may just have to ignore it. Good luck though

Welcome to BlueCollarPCNet Modcasts
Active X in 40 Minutes
For new persons, What is Active X in malware and why so dangerous ? A lengthy discussion about the 3 types of Active X that are generally unknown - the Active X Control Object, Active X Control, and Active X. In malware, these three different malicious designs of the valid Active X range from the highest severity to very severe to severe threat and generally only found in trojans and spyware. This is a very large download - about 47M - which could take up to an hour to download. This is not uncommon now with the MP3 podcasting discussions and see the Spyware Warriors podcasts for an excellent show.
For Dial Up users, I have created the text file of the discussion broadcast to download beneath this bcpcnet-modcast, and will also be posted to our Groups to read. Included in the discussion is the possibility of discovery by yours truly in the first infections of the CoolWebSearch toolbar threat - which was manually deleted by yours truly without any knowledge of removal that exists today. Of course that cured nothing with this very singular malware as we know, it replaced itself with a new variant. See CWShredder - the only known cure in antispyware software worldwide that was developed and successfully cleans it. 47.3M !
PLAY: Paste this link in Windows Media "Open URL" - which stands for open this website address link to the media file. You do not have to download this on Dial Up to play it.... give up to 30 seconds buffering to begin play (large file size).

Active X would be a type of object, such as Quicktime movie, Shockwave, Flash, Graphing, etc.
You can't really get rid of it, but you can download it. In IE, it should have a bar the pops up, right click it.
I would recommend Firefox, but if you want IE will still work. In Firefox, a bar will also pop up, and then click 'Install Plug-ins'
