many things can cause avalanches. any disruption to the snow on a mountainside could cause an avalanche... earth quakes, topical disturbance such as skiers, even noise, wind, or just the weight of the snow. on mountains snow melts a lot slower than sea level because of the cooler air the higher up you go, so every time it snows it layers on top. what happens is that their would be a layer that is slick underneath a heavier layer of snow that is what causes an avalanche.

Many mountains that have trees on it has lesser chance of avalanche. the trees would impede the weight of the snow crashing down.

when the snow is light, you are less likely to have an avalanche. but when the snow isn't as fresh and it isn't groomed so there is a lot of snow piled up on a steep downhill slope, it will break off due to it being heavier than light snow. first it will break off in one clean slate and it just goes from there. i hope i could help.

to much movment or noise around the area where the snow is. if your in an avalanche area be careful where u move you may cause something to move which will most likely make an avalanche more
