The closest major galaxy is the Andromeda Galaxy, about 2.5 million light years away.
The closest known galaxy is the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy about 50,000 light years away. Its small (only about 10,000 light years in diameter) and is actually a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way, so it may not be considered a true independant galaxy.

The closest galaxy to ours is Andromeda, approximately 2.3 million light years away and moving towards us. Some day in the far distant future the two galaxies will "collide" and become a super sized galaxy.
