Nationalististic feelings caused violence against the Armenians. There was a rivalry between Russia, and turkey (which was the ottoman empire.) Muslim Turks distrusted Catholic Armenians, because they thought the Armenians supported Russia. When Armenians protestes against opressive Ottoman policies, the Turks unleashed a massacre on the Armenians. Additional massacres leading to the deaths of millions of Armenians occured over the next 25 years.

Date 1890-1915

Deportation (Tehcir Law), giving the Ottoman government and military authorization to deport anyone it "sensed" as a threat to national security. Several months later, the Temporary Law of Expropriation and Confiscation was passed, stating that all property, including land, livestock and homes, belonging to Armenians was to be confiscated by the authorities. At the same time, Enver (the leader) ordered that all Armenians in the Ottoman forces, some as old as sixty, be disarmed, demobilized and assigned to labor battalion units. Many of the Armenian recruits were taken and executed by Ottoman soldiers and armed squads known as chetes. It is claimed, based on a good deal of anecdotal evidence, that the Ottoman government did not provide any facilities or supplies to care for the Armenians during their deportation, nor when they arrived. The Ottoman government also prevented the deportees from supplying themselves. The Ottoman troops escorting the Armenians not only allowed others to rob, kill and rape the Armenians, but often participated in these activities themselves. In any event, the foreseeable consequence of the government's decision to move the Armenians was a significant number of deaths.

It is believed that twenty-five major concentration camps existed.

Even though nearly all the camps, including all the major ones, were open air, the rest of the mass killings in other minor camps was not limited to direct killings, but also to mass burning, poisoning and drowning.

The Turks were the killers assisted by the Kurds (both Muslims).
They killed the Armenians who were Christians and lived in Armenia which at the time was part of the Ottoman Empire.
This happened in 1915.
Armenia and Anatolia, both under Turkish rule.
Some Armenians took the side of the Russians against the Turks during WW1 and saw the opportunity to free themselves from the oppression of the Ottoman empire.
It was a classic case of ethnic cleansing. The Turks burnt villages and shot all the inhabitants. In other cases they rounded up thousands of people, shot the men and forced the women and children on a death march through the desert whre they were raped and died of hunger, thirst and exhaustion.
The Turks have always denied this happened.
