similar in that we will maintain a presence in the world where there is a possibility of hostility. We are there fighting a war not win but to overthrow a dictatorship and rebuild the country versus occupation and control.
By maintaining a presence in Iraq where it will become a duty station like germany or korea then we have a launching point if ever there is a conflict in the middle east.
Additionaly by fighting the war on terrorism in Iraq we have chosen the battlefield versus letting the war come to us.

I believe what President Bush meant by that, is that there will be a constant force of U.S. soldiers there there in Iraq; just for safe measure in case Iraq would have a civil war, or if Iran would try to invade Israel. It would likely be around 10,000 or more soldiers.
However, before we could even think about that, Iraq has to be brought to a stable situation.

Did you hear the news today? After some will be brought home in 2009 we should keep a force there for ten years? I nearly fell out of my chair. The future isn't looking too bright for our military.
