Why are elderly people often called "old people" but children are never called "new people"?

hmmm.......that's a really good question.
I guess the closest we come is calling them "youngsters"

Because in that instance the opposite word for old would be young....and I am sure you've been told that you are one before. English is a very complex language!

While standing in line at the market last night, behind me was a mom & her 4 year old daughter who was totally fussing, and as she started to drop to the ground she told her mom rather angerily: "My feet hurt!"...
and without batting an eye her mom said: "Well of course they do, you're still breaking them in!"....

They are called young people. Young is the opposite of old in that situaton.
