Muttley came from two cartoons.
Originally he was on "Wacky Races" (1968) along with his partner, Dick Dastardly. They drove The Mean Machine and would cheat in order to win the race. Their plans would backfire and they always lost.
Dastardly and Muttley then got their own series, "Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines" (1969) which featured the do-badders as World War 1 pilots trying to catch a carrier pigeon who carried secret plans.
Muttley's laugh and muttering (rassuh-frazza-pazza) was voiced by the great Don Messick who was no stranger to playing dogs for Hanna-Barbera...he was also the voices for Astro on The Jetsons and Scooby-Doo.

Actually the dog that resembles Muttley, is named Mumbly. He was also featured in the cartoon "Laff-a-Lympics" as the team captain. It was during an episode of this show that it was alluded to that Muttley and Mumbly were somehow related, either as brothers or cousins.

One of our dogs was named Precious by her previous owner after Penelope Pitstop's dog in Wacky Races so we named our other dog Mutley.
