Forget Navy Pier and shopping. Unless you're from the middle of nowhere Nebraska you have almost all the same stores in your hometown at the mall. Gee, another Macys? YAWN! One day for shopping, max. Here are 10 suggestions off the top of my head:
1. CSI exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park
2. Sox or Cubs Game
3. Art Institute
4. Segway or Bike Tour of Grant Park
5. Plan an "ethnic Chicago" day and visit one of more: Andersonville (Swedish), Pilsen (Mexican), Lincoln Square (German), Chinatown, Devon Avenue (Indian), etc.
6. Architectural Boat Cruise on Lake Michigan
7. John Hancock or Sears Tower observation decks (Hancock serves an awesome Sunday buffet brunch in the restaurant up there).
8. Chicago History Museum
9. Go see a show -- we have a ton of live theatre
10. Soak up the sun at the beach at the lakefront!

Water Tower Place is awesome for shopping, and you can get sundaes at nearby Ghiradelli Chocolate! Navy Pier is fun, there's the Art Institute of Chicago. Magnificent Mile is wonderful. If you two are into kinda girly stuff, try tea at Russian Tea Time. http://www.russianteatime.com/

If you're into Chinese, I totally recommend Dim Sum at Three Happiness in China Town! Basically, think buffet that comes to you, and you point to the food you want. SO good, and then stroll China Town afterwards!

The lakefront is beautiful, our museums are fabulous!

If you have a car, or a way to get out of the city, I recommend Brookfield Zoo over Lincoln Park. Gorgeous place. I love going there, always have. There's also a lot of places in the suburbs to see....so much to do!!!

Here's a pretty good all-in-one site... http://www.chicagotraveler.com/

Oh, and one of the better tours of the city, if you're into this sort of thing, is the haunted tour!!! Very cool!

if you like to try different types of restaurants, Chicago can't be beat! Also, try Navy Pier...it has lots of shops and places to get ice cream. And of course, Chicago has great museums!
