Sure they can , as long as they don't fall into the same way of running their team like the Kansas City Royals have. The Royals claim they aren't able to contend because they can't keep their own players. There is no salary cap in MLB therefore you are able to spend as much as you like. Saying you can't afford your players is ridiculous and Kansas City fans deserve better. There was a time when KC was a hell of a baseball town.

As long as the Devil Rays are able to keep guys like Carl Crawford , Rocco Baldelli, and core guys they'll have a shot eventually if they add pieces. They have Scott Kazmir whose turned out to be a pretty good pitcher. They acquired him from the Mets for Zambrano a couple years back.

Granted it's hard to do in the AL East with the Yankees and Red Sox. It's not like they can't spend the money though, some teams are worried that spending a lot of money will put them at risk of not making it back. However, If you want to win , especially in the MLB where it is VERY hard to make the post season you have to spend money. You have to take that risk and play the game, the same game the Red Sox and Yankees play.

So in conclusion , doing the right things, sure the Devil Rays could contend in the AL East, maybe not winning it but making the playoffs certainly.

I don't see why not. They've displayed signs of progress before. They just need to maintain it through a full 162 game season. Tampa Bay closed their 2005 campaign 39-34. Unfortunately, they started 28-61. 90 wins might seem like a lot, but it only translates to a 55% winning percentage.

Um they will win the AL East just as soon as NYY and the Red Sox form their own league.

Tampa can never be expected to truly compete in that division.
Small market teams areat too large a disadvatage. Oakland is the only team I can think of that seems capable of over coming the disadvantage year after year.

Yes the Mets were horrendous from 1962 to 1968 and in 1969 won it.
Padres expansion team in the WS
Arizona expansion team in the WS and won it all.
So time and patience. It is fun to grow with a team.

As long as you have New York and Boston in that East Divison in the American Leauge, i would zero chance of winning the Divison title.

not in the next 5 years.......ill tell u that much....they have a young team...just look at them as the milwakee brewers of the AL....they are building up their team actually using their farm system...>>they need to work on their pitching more than they do on their bats....speed-wise....they are one of the top teams....
