Too much stress no doubt. If you do this for only a few minutes on rare occasion it's ok, but doing it too much or too often can cause the fish too much stress.

beta fish are also calle djapanese fighting fish. if you go to a fish store you see that they are ALWAYS kept seperate from the other beta fish because they would tear each other apart. Beta fish are very territorial so when you put the mirror up to it it probabyl either bangs it's head against the side of the bowl until it dies, or keeps trying to fight until it is too tired to swim and dies from suffocation.

It really depends on how long you did it for. This is perfectly fine for a few minutes a day. It gives your fish exercise and prevents him from getting bored. However, if it goes on for too long, the betta will get stressed because he thinks there is another male in his territory, which he doesn't like. I've also known bettas to ram their heads against the glass in an attempt to fight their own reflections, causing themselves injury.
By the way, bettas are Siamese fighting fish.

It's too much stress for their immune system. I know, it's funny when they get angry and flare their gills... But it's not good for them because they're scared and stressed and that makes them sick.
