I'm going to go against the grain a bit, and not go with the standard computer response that the rest of you have given. Jamarcus Russell will have a pretty decent first year in the silver and black. People have so quickly forgotten how good Jerry Porter once was before Randy Moss arrived. Lamont Jordan, Dominick Rhodes, and either Michael Bush or Justin Fargas will get the running game going, similar to USC's system with Bush and White. No more Art Shell, different coach, different blocking scheme. Aaron Brooks? Marques Tuiasosoppo? Andrew Walter? This team was deprived in a major way last year at the QB position. If you want to make the mistake and compare Jamarcus to David Carr, go right ahead. David Carr was a reach with the number one pick that year. The guy played at Fresno State(WAC, which is no SEC), and there was no clear best that year, in a weak pool. Joey Harrington was the number 3. Lane Kiffin will employ the same system that Norm Chow has in Tennesee. Remember the Titans at 8-8(No pun intended). Who thought the Titans would turn around with Vince Young in one year. The defense was already decent as they boast the best secondary in football (if you don't believe me, check the stats on it last year), and i expect the offense to match it's level competition. They drafted a solid TE from Arizona State which will be another option for J.R. I look for Mike Williams to be revived from his dreadful career with the Lions. The AFC West ain't what it used to be(S.D. lost all of their coaches, Denver is working on a new QB, and K.C. doesn't have a QB) I say that the Raiders improve to a 7-9 ballclub in his first year, and with additional picks in the future, they will be a force in the AFC.

Russel will be an amazing QB, BUT as long as he's on the Raiders he'll be a BUST. Why, because the Raiders have no talent. They have no receivers. A QB can't be good if he has no receives to throw to. I expect Russel demanding a trade after the first year or so to the Packers or Falcons.

Bust. Sorry to say (if your a Raiders fan), but the problem is, is that there is no O-Line, no receivers, a horrible running attack.
Unlike a sport like baseball or basketball, one great player on a football team solely cannot turn around the fortunes of a franchise. Even as good as Manning, Brady, Tomlinson, etc. are, they can't win alone and if you were to even put Manning on the Raiders, they may get five wins tops with the team they have now.

I believe he has the talent to be a top notch NFL quarterback. He will turn the Raiders around if they get that offensive line, doing some blocking. Russell needs to be kept on the sideline holding a clipboard for a season or two as well. It is not a good thing to throw a rookie quarterback in as a starter. Give him some time to learn the pro game. Especially because he will probably just get beat up this coming season. Remember how the Cleveland Browns ruined Tim Couch?

he'll help. they're already pretty close to a good team, they have a great D and some pieces on offense. with a better O-line and a better coach and system they'll make the playoffs. if the O-line holds up they could make the playoffs with Andrew Walter at QB, but Russell is better. so even though they were horrible last year, and Russell will play well, and they will turn around, their turnaround will have more to do with the coaches and O-line than Russell.

Russell began out high-quality. . He had 4 completions out of his first 5 throws. . different than 2 of those 4 have been to the incorrect group. as long as Al Davis is around, i do no longer anticipate the Raiders to be a probability to win the AFC West. yet, as a Bronco fan, I pass over the good video games we used to have while the two communities have been playoff communities.

Jamarcus is a piece to a brighter future for the raiders and I hope he does well. Even though I am a Cowboys fan he is from my home town of Mobile so I will support him

Al davis needs to either give up his control, or wake up from the 70's. until that happens jamarcus or any other new additions wont be able to help the raiders. ALSO.. Jamarcus russell does not = vince young. so he will be like every other rookie QB who is forced to start his first year..

right now it is not even clear that he is starting but as a answer to your question i don't know because on one side jamarcuss russell has lots of talent its just a matter if he uses it or not and on the other side i can really see him as being a bust i mean look at it a player that is considered to be a franchise QB for about 10 years and he was the number 1 pick he might fall under all that pressure and he was judged on only one game so yeah

JR will NOT turn the raiders around, unless he gets some extra talent around him. With the loss of Randy Moss, he will have some trouble finding a receiver. Also the raiders need an O Line. JR will get sacked many times this year, I believe around 40+. He will have to get the ball out of his hands quickly, and he will need a much improved running game then last year. With the talent the raiders have this year, they'll be picking 3rd or 4th.
