The most advanced technology is 2 feet of lead. There is just no other way to do it. The whole idea of a manned Mars mision is incredibly stupid unless you are willing to assemble a massive main craft that gets built on orbit an can have the several foot thick radiation shield. You just have to have mass between you and the oncoming cosmic rays and solar wind.
The cost to build and fuel such a thing is going to be measured in the hundreds of billions to trillions of dollars. It's just not worth it at this point.

Cosmic rays are the most dangerous for astronauts when they leave earth's orbit. in earth's orbit the magnetic field protects them.
So maybe we can artificially generate a strong magnetic field around the space craft to protect the people inside.
Add to that about 2 feet of lead shielding. Actually scientists have discovered some composites and alloys that are much lighter , thinner cheaper and offer good protection. Another cheap way is to wrap the space craft in certain kinds of soils(along with the shielding), that have ray absorbing properties.
We will get to mars and beyond, the only thing stopping us is the human imagination( or lack of)

Well, one of the most difficult issues for a human settlement in Mars is definitely related to radiation. This radiation can be UV rays or Ionizing radiation.

humans who live for a lifetime on Mars will probably have to live underground to minimize their radiation exposure.
The high radiation load is certainly not a good news. But it can been dealed with. Furthermore, Zubrin in *The Case for Mars,* page 118, says the radiation on the surface of Mars is 9 rems per year, which is very good agreement with the 10 rem figure for the lowlands (where a mission would land). He also says sandbags would reduce the interior dosage to 6 rems per year, and with a lot of EVAs the average dosage would be 7 rems per year.

The incidence of radiation cataracts in Skylab, Mir, and ISS FUBAR occupants is 100% - and that is only outside the Earth's atmosphere (equal to 908 g/cm^2 of lead shielding) but still inside the magnetosphere. Only a 3-6 month exposure, too.
Folks on the moon can tunnel a few meters into regolith for temperature and radiation shielding.

Folks on a trip to Mars will get FRIED. Human 50% lethal dose of whole body radiation has been downgraded to about 400 rem. If a fat solar storm boils up they will be killed outright. NASA says that cannot happen, but none of the spokesdrones will be going on the trip.
