MSNBC took polls of residents of Coastal towns and asked them about the upcoming hurricane season and how they were preparing. Im assuming there were several different polls taken, as these don't equal 100%. But check this out
After being told that 13-17 named storms would come about this season, 3-5 becoming major hurricanes, and at least one hitting the U.S. this is what people said:
88% Said they have taken no steps in fortifying their homes.
16% Said that if told to evacuate they would refuse.
53% Said they didn't think they were vulnerable, so they wouldn't prepare.
61% Said they never thought of getting a hurricane survival kit.
What is wrong with these people!? Was Katrina not bad enough? I guaruntee none of these people lost someone on that hurricane. How can people be so stupid and so naive?

Ok first, Hurricane season HAS started, and second, these people live in Coastal regions, as in Louisiana, Texas, Florida, the Carolinas and so on. They have seen the devestation in New Orleans. Thats the whole point of this poll. How dumbfounded the scientists are that people refuse to acknowledge the possiblities of a deadly hurricane.

I live in Florida and myself nor anybody I know were in that poll. We do take hurricanes seriously. We know what we need to buy if it looks like a hurricane is coming such as food, water, etc. We are prepared because we have hurricane shutters. Not only do we have to prepare for our homes some of us like myself work in hospitals and have to be on call during a hurricane It's just that we don't spend our lives worrying about the next hurricane. It we do that then we don't need to live here.

I live in SW Florida on the Gulf Coast. I would first suggest to you don't compare Katrina to any other hurricane or destructive act of Nature. Katrina was the disaster it was because THE FREAKIN' POLITICOS STOLE THE MONEY AND SPENT IT ON OTHER THINGS!
The population has NEVER been prepared properly to weather a storm of this magnitude even though they had 4 days of warnings the storm would be devistating. No Good Nagin knew it, Blankety-Blank Blanco knew it. And the best story of all was they knew they were not going to do anything themselves except wait for Uncle Sugar to come in and save their sorry 455s!
In this case it wasn't the peeps fault! They were so used to being told the Nanny State would see that the Good Ol' US Guvmint would take care of them. See, that's how total welfare states think and act! Nagin and Blanco are two of the worst panderers.
The whining you heard was from LA administrations, at all levels, complaining that FEMA and Homeland Security were not moving fast enough.
Many years ago, after Donna, circa 1950, the Great State of Florida recognized they would have to be prepared in the future to protect the residents. Lots of planning that did not include immediate help from the US Goverment were put into motion and by the time Andrew rolled around in 1992 Florida was indeed ready and prepared. The unfortunate situation, at that time was the US Government was reading the headlines from Miami to the effect WE NEED HELP!!! within hours the first of a long line of helpers rolled on South Florida and the rest is history.
Florida still continues to learn from every episodic act of Nature that happens here. Charley, Wilma and Katrina were all good learning experiences. Governor Jeb Bush saw to it and Charley Crist is following up.
Has LA learned anything at all from Florida's experience? Apparently not. They have not asked to look at any preparedness plan Florida has offered any state wanting it!

I live in South Florida and every season since Andrew I have been prepared. My house has shutters and secure doors and windows. I have lanterns, batteries, canned goods. I do not have an evacuation plan because in South Florida, the only place to go is north and the storm could follow you. It's best if you live in a secure building with a good roof to stay where you will be safe. You are not safe in your car..After Wilma, we put on new roof, bought two generators.and installed a gas water heater, dryer and stove.what will really hurt is gasoline...After Wilma we were on generator power for three weeks. When Katrina hit here(1st) it was only a cat 1...I have lived down here 21 years and have only been through two bad storms.. Usually the weather is perfect!!!!!

Well, the hurricane center has always said that "this is going to be the worst hurricane season ever." And, it really never is.
People have known about the threat and they still moved to the coastal area. I used to live in a coastal area near the Atlantic in Florida and never got hit directly by a hurricane.

i fear none but god. hurricanes tornadoes what ever. there is nothing that we can do to stop it. many do not have the means to get away from it. of corse it would be nice if there was some one out there an amazing savior that could save people from these catastrophes but there aren't any. so there for people have to live with the constant knowledge that this is going to effect them sooner or later when they live in high risk areas. until the american people demand more be done to protect many people victimized by these natural disasters to make sure they are ensured a safer enviroment so it does not cost more on the tax payers after they become refugees this is just the way it is!

Well first of all those people that took the poll may not live in the states that get affected. Second of all you shouldn't fortify your home until you know there is a hurricane coming because you may just waste money. Lastly hurricane season hasn't really started so people probably aren't going to buy things until later times....

I'm not afraid of hurricane season because I know that all the boys managing FEMA are sitting around with their thumbs stuck in their sphincters like they did during hurricane Katrina.

They all think the hurricane will go somewhere else or not be as bad as the weatherman predicts.
And they expect the rest of the country to fix it when the hurricane does hit.
