Many people hold views that would be labeled "conservative" and views that would be labeled "liberal", depending on the issue. I know very few who actually adhere to a strict "party" line on every issue. (Package deals are for travel agents, as far as I'm concerned.)
However, it's more convenient in discussions and articles for everyone to pretend these are neatly segregated homogenous groups who act as a single entity.
