i have a lynksys wireless-g broadband router and a e home,2 dollar.. literally, network card. the router is all the way across my house, which is brick, and my network card is in my computer (which is built by me, if it matters) on the floor. I get a signal every now and then but a very low signal, 5.5-11.0 mbps, i want to get a better signal and speed, i bought a 10 dollar gigaware 7 dBi high-gain networking antenna kit for my router, and it didn't improve anything. Just in case you were wondering i have a 2wire 2700HG-d modem which, on the other computer, shows up as having 400Mbps. Another weird thing is if i get no signal, i can restart my computer and sometimes when it comes back on, i get a signal. I want gaming speeds. Another thing is, i took my computer and moved it into the same room and booted it up and got the full 54mbps but still had a low signal. i am looking for the most cost effective way to fix this, you can post the answer or you can im me, ill be on for a while thx

The quality of the connection will be only as good as the weakest part of the system. Put a good wireless card in your computer, put a good EXTERNAL antenna on both the computer and the router. You may need directional ones. I suspect your wireless lan card is less than a great performer!

You can get external bridges - which then connect to your eithernet port. These usually have higher power and external antennas and can connect at greater distances.

You really need to get a new router. You have to get the N series, it will give you the best signal and really fast speeds for gaming. The N series routher will give you a wider range and of course 10X the speed you would get from a conventional wireless routher. It will cost you a little over a hundred though, it is defiantly worth it.

some good techniques above. additionally, i like to commence with some straightforward issues besides. have you ever rebooted all gadgets? merely intend to make confident. i've got seen the place some instant routers desire this periodically. How are you "connecting to the community" in case you may no longer hook up with the instant gadget? you ought to purchase new instant card for laptop - if that fixes it than you be attentive to the place your problem became, if it does no longer, return it (verify you verify the shops "re-stocking" fee agreements, return coverage, and so on.). Or, attempt to borrow from a chum or different laptop in case you have yet another card. As reported above, attempt to narrow down what isn't working.
