My dad was recently using his computer and i locked up. I could no longer get this machine to boot up so I assumed that the power supply was shot. I purchased a new power supply and plugged in nothing but the motherboard connector and the secondary power connector to the board. When I turned the machine on the power supply turned on and the processor fan spun up but then I noticed smoke coming from the chipset chip on the motherboard. Any thoughts?

Could there have been anything I did wrong to cause this or is this just likely the motherboard going?

Lightly run your finger tip over all the IC's that you can. If any of them feel like they have a bubble in the middle, it is fried. Smoke coming from a computer is never a good sign.

At this factor that's probably the ram failing. whilst this occurs you need to the two bypass into opposite the clock or rework the settings...Now I relatively have only built a working laptop or computing gadget with this precise board and clocked a fsb of as much as 293 besides the shown fact that it wasn't good i think of i settled @ 278 which many have pronounced seems to be a sprint a top cut back for this board. yet different concerns is that with 2 stick of ram @ distinctive sizes the ram won't ram in twin channel mode so this might additionally be a proscribing ingredient. ultimately have you ever tried hitting ctrl-F1 interior the bios to open the stepped forward placing to offer the device a sprint extra voltage? ultimately if your unhappy w/ overall performance....ebay the processors and get an E5200 the processor is barely ~ $75 yet starts @ 2.5 ghz and has 12.5x multiplier so it easily ran as much as 3.4 ghz I sponsored it as much as 3.25 because of the fact the ram timings have been tighter on my low-fee *** ram. yet that total device i built for decrease than $3 hundred and it outruns my 3.15ghz (OC'ed) q6400 quad. stable success and it you desire some ideas deliver me a message.

Your MB is pretty much done cooking and ready to be eaten.

You have to change your MB, and unless you find the same one, you will have to re-install your operating system to make sure the system is stable.

Perfect time to upgrade and do a good clean up!!
