It shocked the whole baseball world. How can a player with that many injuries who barely could walk and with a lot of pain, hit a homerun in the World Series as a pinch hitter vs. the best closer at the time? Lasorda made a daring and desperate move and it paid off big time. That moment went down as the most thrilling in L.A. history and possibly in baseball history. Go Dodgers!!

I was only four years old at the time, so I can't really answer the question. But it did shock the whole nation. What he did was an instant classic. It can be compared to Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard Around the World", Bucky Dent's homerun to send the Yankees to the World Series, and other great baseball feats.

it is definitely one of the greatest plays of all-time, and he did it against one of the greatest closers of all-time.

They were special because they got all the way to the World Series. The HR did not shock me because Kirk Gibson had so much experience hitting against the A's pitching when he was in the AL. Maybe he knew that a sidearm submarine pitcher can be hit with an uppercut and not direct swing.

I thought it was great that Gibson was giving it the ol' college try, but that Eck would beat him as the A's cruised to the title.

I was lifting my bottle of beer to take a sip -- and stopped halfway, almost dropped it. That Gibson could even swing -- let alone swing totally off-balance (watch it) and knock it out... just amazing. Jack Buck's call nailed it: "I don't believe what I just saw!"

That Eck walked Davis just moments before was almost as amazing -- he was very, very stingy with free passes that year, and Davis wasn't much of a hitter by then -- but that bit gets rather lost in the home run stir.

No. . . .
It's pissed me off real good, but it didn't shock me.
Frankly, I don't know why Eckersley didn't just bean Gibson. Might've knocked that gimp right out of the Series. Too bad. . . .
