Specifically, if the last game of a series is rained out and it is the last time the teams will meet that season - and hell to make it interesting lets say the make up is rained out too. If the games would have no effect on the standings - would they make it up at the end of the year? If not - how does this effect the final standings (does the home team forfeit)? Also, what about stat chases (let's say a guy has 71 HRs with 1 makeup game possible).

Of course. Last year's champs the St. Louis Cardinals only played 161 games while going 83-79. That's horrible, but because Houston lost too many games, St. Louis automatically won the division and the Giants had no chance at advancing from fourth or whatever it was. No records were on the line, so they didn't need to play that extra game. Even if somebody was trying for historic numbers, the game would not be made up if did not make any difference in the standings. (Tough Luck for that guy .)

Sure, it's happened plenty of times. Typically, as you postulate, it is caused by a rainout or two that are not made up, because the teams are not scheduled to meet again and the results would not affect the standings or determination of advancement to the postseason.

One example: the 1989 Braves were scheduled to play the Dodgers in Atlanta the final weekend, Fri 9/29 through Sun 10/1. The first two games were rained out, and they didn't bother playing a doubleheader on Sunday, as the Braves were dead last and the Dodgers stuck in fourth. Two more games on the weekend probably would have let them reach one million in attendance -- the season total for Atlanta was 984,930. The team finished with 161 games played, as they had had a tied game in May that was replayed.

And sometimes, not often thankfully, things like 1994-95 happen.

The games will be made up if they matter in the standings, but not stat chases. In 2003, (i think that year) the giants were ten games ahead and the dodgers were deep in third and way ahead of fourth, so both of those teams didnt play the 162nd game to give the giants a rest before the playoffs.

Late season cancelled games are only made up if one or both teams is in a close division race and the results of the game will make a difference in whether or not they make it to post-season and if so, whether or not it night affect home field advantage.

Individual statistical chases are not included in this decision.

if it means nothing for standings then no they wont play, but if it is a chance for someone to break a record they will play, baseball has said before that it would do what it could to give a player every fair chance to set or break a record

They would not play the game. If I guy is trying to break the steroid record, he is out of luck.
