he grabs the food and spit it back out. is that normal?

also, he's swimming like crazy as if he's about to attack another fish, when really nobody's there. his tank is a 1/2 gallon. i'm not sure if he's not happy in it... or he's just too excited.

You might try soaking the food a little bit before you feed it to him, he's probably having a hard time eating it until it softens up.

He might be seeing his reflection in something near the tank or even the side of the tank it's self is there is a dark object nearby. Check to make sure he can't see himself.

Betta's need at least a 5 gallon tank to live in. You can feed him Betta food, blood worms( they love blood worms), brine shrimp and tropical flakes, variety is good! He is most likely seeing his reflection and thinks another male Betta!

try some blood worms for him... mine used to love those!

As for swimming like a crazy nut... sounds like he's itching for a fight. Hold a mirror up to the tank and let him think he's in the ring. Maybe he needs to get it out of his system. (don't make a habit of this though).
