with killer crab-like-mini robots...at the end the main guy is trapped ontop of a building with them after they followed him up in the elevator, but he gets away.

...might need some more details, but this sorta sounds like a sci-fi/action film from 1984, entitled "Runaway", starring Tom Sellack, the beautiful Cynthia Rhodes, and a brilliantly villianous performance by Gene Simmons, from the band, Kiss!!!

That's the movie Runaway. It starred Tom Selleck and, don't laugh, Gene Simmons. Gene Simmons did a pretty good job as a bad guy in this movie, if I remember correctly.
