I know they aren't contractions, though, because they feel different and my stomach isn't tightening. What is this?

At this point, and especially if this is your first pregnancy, you could very well be in labor. If not, then you just may be extra sensitive to the sensations of your cervix beginning to dilate. My sister was 3cm dilated 2 weeks before she actually went into labor. You will find out at your next appointment, I would assume that at this point in time you are seeing a doctor once a week.

If the cramps are consistent, like they come every few minutes and your back starts to ache then you may be in early labor. If you relax for awhile and they stop it might be braxton hicks. Everyone always says that you 'know' when you're in labor, but that's not always true. If you feel pressure on your back or there's a dull throbbing pain and you are having consistent tightening of your abdomen you may be in labor. See if they are consistent. If they are wait until they are about 5-10 minutes apart before going to the hospital. If you live a distance away go at 10 minutes apart, they could speed up at any time.

This is called pre-labor where you will feel some mild pains and Braxton-Hicks contractions. Pre-labor can happen weeks or just days before real labor so I bet you will be delivering soon!

Call your doctor or midwife if the cramps become very regular and start to become painful enough that it is hard to talk while you're having one.

That would mean you are in active labor!

Best of luck and congrats on your pregnancy.

They are TINY contractions, braxton hicks. Real contractions actually feel like period cramps, just multiplied in pain by a billion. You're body is getting ready for the delivery. Call your doctor if you're worried about it.

Most likely braxton hicks contractions - the forerunner of the real thing. It's just your body's way of preparing you and the baby for the final event.

However, to be on the safe side, you should go to your doctor to ensure that your cervix isn't dilating.

Congratulations and a safe delivery to you and baby!

My early stage of labor felt exactly like period cramps, so I'd call the doc. Better safe than sorry!

Some are normal, but if they get to where they are happening all the time or are getting painful I would check with my Dr just to make sure.

Sounds like it's really close to baby time!! Call your OBGYN and let them know...they make want to see you to check for dilation. Good luck!

drink some water. if they continue call the er. they'll tell you if you should come in. seriously, that's what they are there for. they would much rather you come in, get checked out and sent home than have problems later!

congrats and good luck!
