The egg. It was laid by critters long before chickens ever existed.

In a more recent sense, the egg again. It was laid by a chicken progenitor, and the baby inside the egg was the first chicken, created by a fusion of the DNA of two chicken progenitors.

In Christianity the chicken because God put everything on earth in it's adult state. Example: What came first man or child? But if you have other beliefs the egg, but in the end it takes a chicken to lay the egg, you decide.

I would believe the chicken would come first because the chick in the egg wouldn't survive without the "mother" chicken caring for it. So where did the grown chicken come from? Higher power, probably.

Egg. Eri16k has it exactly backwards. According to evolutionary theory, the first chicken would have come from, naturally, its own egg, and it would have been a genetic mutation from parental proto-chicken and proto-rooster, close but not quite chicken and rooster genetically.

the egg came first....reptiles have been laying eggs since the beginning of time....chickens are fairly recent in the grand scheme of things

if you believe in evolution the chicken because microorgonisms were first and only needed to split then later evolved to an animal that could reproduce sexually leading to animals that through adaptation became chickens
