Is it because you are worried about what others think, or may think of you? Stop worrying. You can't control the thoughts -- or even the behaviors -- of others.
Instead, focus on doing your best, forgive yourself for being a fallible human being when you mess up, try to do better and don't disturb yourself about things you can't change, or about what others may or may not think about you.
That's the beginning. The rest is confidence.

I liked what the previous person said...I couldn't say it any better.
Some ideas on toward what you could do would be is to go camping. You wouldn't believe how small we all are when lost within the wilderness.
Sailing, hiking, etc. Just something that gets your mind off yourself.

I think by becoming ever more interested in the world at large. As you begin to contemplate people and events outside your world, you will become a more dynamic individual. As you do this, you will stop thinking about yourself and begin to concentrate on others. It's not easy, but it's not as difficult as you think, either.
Best wishes.

hmm.....alcohol? just kidding. What kind of people are your friends? I used to have very low self esteem. One day I realized that it wasn't because I was a loser or dork, it was because my friends made me feel like I was a loser or dork. It might be hard to sever connections just like that, but such is life.
