Simple answer.......
No class.
I'm from NY & believe it or not, have seen rude treatment of "servers" much more prevalent in other parts of the country.
After all they're just "servers" seems to be the attitude.
Most work their asses off & if they do it with a smile, deserve a nice tip.
Factoid....."servers" are in the top percentile of jobs with the highest (sustained) stress levels.
Higher than police , firemen, nurses & others who have high (peak) stress.
Also, if you are really rude, you run the risk of getting something you really don't want in your food.

Unfortunately servers have been portrayed as poor, uneducated people that can't get any other type of job.
UNTRUE.
I work in a restaurant that employ's 35 servers, many have at least 1 degree if not more. I myself have 3
I choose to work in a restaurant as a server because I make a ton of money....... and I have flexibility with my kids schedules.
some people have nothing better to do than to crap on someone they think is beneath them......
bottom line is this..... if you treat me like crap in my establishment of business, you are not getting my most superb service, I am saving it for those guests that deserve my respect, and my fabulous service.
and believe me I will tell you off with a smile and you won't even know its coming.
I am a server, not a servant.

You know it makes me wonder why people are always rude to the servers but they never are rude to the bartender. i've been a bartender for 5 years now. and i made alot of comment to rude customers and usually they just take it and swallow it but when i occasionally pic up a serving shift people think they own me or something. new flash people. good luck with that. we have our own saying in every restaraunt. if there is a rude customer even the kitchen guys knows where you are sitting. better becareful next time when you decide to act up and try to be cool in front of your friends.
but then again people who treat the server like crap usually have kids later on in life will work in the restaraunt and they will go through the same thing. hey kids thakn your dad or mom for the karma they left you. now you are not getting tipped because of that hahahahaha BURRNNNNNN

I sometimes think it is powertripping. Being in a position of ordering is a position of power.
My worst situation was when a man grabbed for me in a sexual manner, and so I stomped on his foot. I was working in a rough town, so the boss didn't care.
But sophisticated restaurants are just as bad...my EX husband would pick on every aspect of the dining experience. Lucky for me, it has become an EX experience, pity for the servers that still have to put up with him.
People who are happy with their own life don't have to pick on others. Maybe we can feel sorry for dLck head customers - NOT!

b/c they are ignorant a$$holes! They think "oh, servers are stupid and low". There are ppl who really just go to restaurants and be all picky, snobby, talk to the servers rude (even when server did nothing to initiate it).
I had an Indian customer w/ 3 other ppl. He crosses his arm, looks at me with squinty eyes, shakes his head and says to me in a rude tone "I do not eat meat, chicken or fish." and that's all he said. I waited for like 5 seconds for him to say "can u suggest to me any item?" ...but no....he did not. I'm like ...ok? ...and ...so..? u just made a statement, u didn't ask me to suggest any dishes to u. he just set how the service will be already. u don't talk to ur waitress in that way...especially since they bring u ur food.
And he keeps saying, make sure no meat, no fish sauce. I'm like yea, b/c it's vegetarian....I know what vegetarian means. And he doesn't even say , excuse me. He just says loudly, hey, what's in this? is there any fish or chicken? So I gave them minimal service.
But anyway, ppl like these have no manners!!

Ignorance. It's just that simple. I have worked at a grocery store for 4 years, & I never hated people as much as I do until this point. People are SO rude. It really makes me cynical. People do things like, knock things over & don't pick it up because "people get paid to do that", don't tip well because "they get a paycheck like everybody else", etc. It's really sick.
I would never even think of saying/doing things that I've seen some of these people do. It really blows my mind.

Yes, people should understand that but they don't.
However, servers need to set the tone of the relationship with the customer by being friendly and courteous. If a server can't smile when talking to customers, they shouldn't be a server.

Perhaps because, having *always* managed to motivate minimal service from every server they've encountered, they don't realize a better level is possible. Or if they've acquired the habit of arrogance later, they just think that today's youth aren't up to the level of yesteryear's.

I once ate a whole restaurant and I Sh*t out the waiter the next day. But most of the time, when I eat "In" a restaurant, the service I received usually were pretty good, and of course, I tipped a min. of 15%.
