It is for the simple reason that whenever we feel good we desire thanking someone... and we land up thanking God considering him to be the ultimate in life! Whenever something bad happens in our life... we never blame God. Why? The doctrine of karma that governs all life forms makes it clear that whatever be our sufferings or happiness... all is the result of our karma in the past!
God Almighty never interferes in the creation of his. God always acts as a Dhrista (onlooker)! For this simple reason all atheists never seem to thank God whenever happiness faces them head-on. Does this mean that all become sinners in neglecting God... no, never! In the process of karma only the individual is involved. None else on Mother Earth is responsible for our fate... built it good or bad!
As we sow so shall we reap... nothing less or more! Every happening in our life is of our making. Whatever we do know shall become our future. Whatever we are facing now... is our past! All is the result of a system that cannot err! Nothing is disordered at any stage in the Cosmos as stated by the famous physicist Stephen Hawking in his book, "a brief history of time".
Whenever happiness knocks our door we thank God but when misfortune strikes us in the face... whom do we knock out? To get out of the rut of wrong karma enacted in the past... we can only perform Punya karma (good deeds) in present life. There is no other way out! Blaming others for our misfortune is not the solution. Introspect and find the causes... we can slowly patiently make only good things happening to us. Yes... this is possible!
We always thank God assuming everything in the Cosmos were created by him. We fail to realize that the omnipotent God is not the form of a human being... it is a potential source of pure energy. The whole cosmic system is a mighty computer that runs on the doctrine of karma... as our deeds... so is the outcome! If our karma demands we be born in the house of a farmer in next manifestation... desiring birth in the house of King is just not possible. More on Karma - http://www.godrealized.com/karma.html

Who ever said you were expected to thank god got it all wrong. Thankfulness isnt something that should be expected that defeats the whole point of it. Thankfulness should come from the heart and not be forced by another. If you see Good and Bad in the world and you believe in God I would say its safe to assume that you can blame both upon your God. But just because you see Good or Bad doesnt mean it really exists that way in the eyes of your God. What you consider Bad could be Good hidden from your eyes. I personaly try not to see things as Bad if I can help it. To say something is bad is pretty closed minded imo. I see love in everything but I personaly see more love in some acts then others. Hope this brings some light on the subject in some way.

The theory goes that god knows everything and has a plan, so when bad things happen they are a part of the plan and you should not blame him. If you are mistreated, taken advantage of or anything else of that kind you should just shut up and wait for heaven. Makes you wonder who would be interested in promoting such ideas...

For the same reason you thank your host for a wonderful dinner party when leaving but never say: 'Oh by the way, the food was crap!' Manners, so hopefully if you apply them to God you will apply them to other people as well.
It'd be cool but God is not a person nor does he control what happens to us, that is a very ancient and superstitious way of thinking about God.

Everything that happens (either good or bad) has been done by God and God never does anything that isn't good for human, so everything that happens, there is a philosophy behind it that only God knows, and we must thank God for all those philosophies.

God does only good things, and out of that only good things come out. when u come to realize that, your life will change,,that is if u truly believe it with your heart. He isn't responsible for the bad things: At first it might seem that if God created all things then evil must have been created by God. However, there is an assumption here that needs to be cleared up. Evil is not a "thing" - like a rock or electricity. You can't have a jar of evil! Rather, evil is something that occurs, like running. Evil has no existence of its own - it is really a lack in a good thing. For example, holes are real but they only exist in something else. We call the absence of dirt a hole - but it cannot be separated from the dirt. So when God created, it is true that all that existed was good. One of the good things that God made was creatures who had the freedom to choose good. In order to have a real choice, God had to allow there to be something besides good to choose. So God allowed these free angels and humans to choose good or non-good (evil). When a bad relationship exists between two good things we call that evil, but it does not become a "thing" that required God to create it.
Perhaps a further illustration will help. If I were to ask the average person "does cold exist?" - his/her answer would likely be yes. However, this is incorrect. Cold does not exist. Cold is the absence of heat. Similarly, darkness does not exist. Darkness is the absence of light. Similarly, evil is the absence of good, or better, evil is the absence of God. God did not have to create evil, but rather only allow for the absence of good.God looks at things from an eternal perspective. We look at things from an earthly perspective. Why did God put man on earth knowing that Adam and Eve would sin and therefore bring evil, death, and suffering on all mankind? Why didn’t He just create us all and leave us in Heaven where we would be perfect and without suffering? The best answer I can come up with is this: God didn’t want a race of robots who did not have a free will. God had to allow the possibility of evil for us to have a true choice of whether to worship God or not.God is not the author of evil.8 However, God does reward and punish on the basis of good and bad behavior. Therefore, God does bring judgment and calamity (either directly or through human authorities) on those who rebel.9 God will ultimately judge all people, since rebels will not be allowed in the new, perfect creation. When good things happen it's a result/consequence of your choices. Thus, same with not so good things. God put consequences here for people to realize where to turn away from their sin since they couldn't realize it before. Thus, God lives by the law/rules because He cares, just like rules and the law of the city are here to protect individuals. He has to live by that law in order for us to live.
The response to the foregoing is summed up in God's nature and His desire for mankind. Look at the logic: How could God allow for love without the potential for evil? God could have created robots that do nothing more than forever say, "I love you, I love you, I love you." But such creatures would be incapable of a real love relationship. Love is a choice, and the Bible says God desires a real love relationship with His creation. Love is not real unless was have the ability to not love. One of God's attributes is omniscience.

How about 'Thanking God' for the 'good and bad'
things in our lives ????
God never promised our lives to be 'happy' or always
be 'wonderful' . More often than not, the 'bad things'
are created by our own choices.... not His.
Your Mother is 'human'.... just as you are.... but, you're
to 'Honor' her...even though you don't see eye to eye
on various subjects.
Your 'choices' are yours.... the consequences are yours....
right or wrong..... it's your own choice....... so why 'blame'
god for the way things turn out ??? Why not 'Thank' Him
for the bad and good in our lives...because the 'bad' often
contributes to our 'character' later on in life !!!!!!

We thank GOD for the good, and ourselves for the bad. Remember the only reason we're here is because JESUS died for our sins. We're not perfect. Humans are to blame for our problems. We make all this happen.
