A therapist that says that it's OK for someone to abuse me, JUST because it's THEIR house, & that if I don't like it then leave. & she tried to tell me that I should ignore the abuse. Now how could you ignore someone who's taking your disability checks & beating on you? Can you ignore the fact that you have a black eye & a busted lip & all your money is taken away from you & you have no public transportation money for school?

It sounds like its time for a new therapist; one who is more sympathetic to your situation and realistic about it as well. There is no excuse for abuse like yours, even if you are residing in someone else's household. Sometimes you have to try a couple of different therapists until you find the one that works well for you. I wish you the best!

Call the police!

And get a restraining order against the abuser.

He will still have to pay the mortgage if he owns the house and wants to keep it.

And you will be able to live in the house and he cannot come near you or the house.

Also report your therapist, he sounds like he may be in cahoots with your abuser

You can get a restraining order for up to 5 years in some states.

Also you will be able to keep 100% of your disability checks

And you will not have to pay any rent unless he lets the house go into forclosure and you want to save it for him.

Good Luck.

My guess is she is a very inexpensive therapist. You get what you pay for and she is not good at what she does. It is not o'k for anyone to be abusive to another person. She is correct about one thing, though, you CAN leave and if you don't then my finger would be pointed at you. More than likely , he's not going to change so by staying you're only allowing the abuse to occur. Have you ever heard the saying "wrong me once, shame on you. Wrong me twice, shame on me."

Be brave! Good luck to you.~

That is one messed up therapist. Get a new one immediately.

That said, move out, change your mailing address so they can't get your checks and they can't beat you up. It is not running away - it is taking control of your life. Go to a shelter for abused women if you have to at first - they will protect you and help you.

NO ONE has the right to abuse your or take your money. Good luck!!!

I suspect you're hearing what you want to hear.

What I suspect she told you is to leave.

No, you don't have to ignore the abuse. Leave it behind you.

Of course, you do have two other options.

1. Get another therapist that will help you learn to enjoy the abuse, since you won't leave it and it isn't going to change.
2. (This is a long shot) Forget therapy for yourself, get therapy for whoever it is that you live with that abuses you. If you can do that, it's possible that they might stop without you having to leave. Of course, that therapist is probably going to suggest they just toss you out anyway, since they obviously don't like you.

I doubt that a therapist would say that if they thought you were really being abused.

It might be possible that she/he does not believe you which is a totally different story.

If you are telling the truth, please contact a domestic violence hotline for assistance. I will look up the number for you...

That is no therapist. Report this idiot to the AMA and get a new one pronto. And for goodness sake - get out of that situation and get to a shelter.
