When you are in love with some one you expect love in return.
When you love a youngster, you expect decency in return.
When you love a colleague, you expect fidelity in return.
When you love God, you expect tranquility in return.

Expectation , in my opinion , is not the word. Acceptance seems more apt.

If I perceive a sort of acceptance of my love , from whoever I love , I find there is this natural blossoming of love. In this we have to go back to the FIRST lesson in love as we were born. I think , the mother loves the child with totally no expectation and when the child responds the joy is many fold.

It this is basic lesson that we mimic throughout our lives. If the gesture of love is spurned then we are disappointed.

We can only say that acceptance of Love may be called an "expectation".

I have two kittens and a puppy that i have adopted. They are so loving. I can take it that they feel my love for them and are reciprocating or I can also think that their sighns of affection are their ways of telling me that they want their buiscuits & meat. The same could be said about human beings. Aged parents who have held on to their property are better loved and taken care of than those who were foolish enough to have signed over everything. A child with five-figure salary is more loved than another who ekes out a living or worse, is unemployed.
The minimum expectation in love is to be loved back. Those who love even when not love back are selfless lovers. I believe God is such a lover though most religions have made him out to be jealous and petty.

I think there should always be expectations in love. I don't expect to be fooled around on if my love says I am the only one. I don't expect to be hit if my affections are not to my love's expectations. Yes, there are expectations of respect and loyalty. Love is sacrifice and faithfulness. Read Corinthians 13 in the Judeo-Christian bible. It is an excellent interpretaton of what the expectations are.

No conditions apply in the beginning of love because brain stops thinking in logical manner. But when this intoxication evaporates and logic side of brain start functioning again, the lovers become normal person and start thinking in a natural selfish manner. Here lovers begin to expect tit-for-tat or better from each other.

These 'expectations' which human beings have is one cause of their misery. We cant read each others mind & these expectations we have from one another are unclear & keep changing ! Why not have a board in the house with everyone's expectations of each other clearly spelled out...somehow i dont think that's the solution. We have to try to evolve into beings who love ppl for what they are & not what you want them to become.

Yes, it matters. True love expects continuity, respect, friendship, intimacy and affirmation. Love is not just another 4 letter word.
