My brakes are making a chirping/ high pitch noise when they are not applied. Like something is rubbing. The noise disappears totally when brakes applied. I have took off all 4 sides and taken the calipers apart and put back on with new pads and rotors. My suspicion is worn or incorrect pad shims... any mechanics experienced this or know if this is a likely cause? I know the calipers are good and don't stick and the slide pins are fine too.

I`ve been there before. They are the "wear indicators" on the pads. You need new brake pads.

look at the pads not the medal... pads should be thicker than the medal part shouldnt be any shims not on any ive ever done try running a screwdriver a round the edge of rotors where the rust meets the shiney parts sometimes rust will build up there and squeak.... you might have a dust cover bend some check those also not much more than taking it all back off and redoing it see if you miss something sounds like its a dust cover

apply an anti squeek in between the shims and pads...also take the leading and trailing edges of the pad itself and file it down at an angle......another thing to look at is the squeeker, make sure its not rubbing oh so barely

After reading what you have done, my first thought would be a sticking valve in the master cylinder not allowing the fluid to retur to the brake resivour.

I might be way off track but it is a thought.
