Personally, I think every individual has the right to decide the fate of their own body.

That includes the right to choose, the right to die, the right to take drugs or drink alcohol or use tobacco (at any age), the right to eat fatty foods, the right to exercise or not, the right to have sex and committed relationships with whomever they choose, and even the right to sell their body parts, either during life or at the time of death.

Society does not owe you any support for your decisions however. They should be personal choices and by making them you should be accepting personal responsibility for those choices.

Otherwise, as government does today, we are diminishing the value of being human, and of our being sentient self-aware and self-responsible beings. By meddling in what we have the right to do with our very own existence, governments become de facto dictatorships.

If you want to smoke cigarettes, it is your right. But is not society's responsibility to pay for your medical treatment in the event you suffer as a result. The same goes for taking drugs, or overeating beyond your body's metabolic abilities.

And it should not be society's responsibility to care for the "less fortunate" in a free society.

In a free society, all of us have the full opportunity to make ourselves what we want to be. And we should have the right to make whatever choices we chose in that regard, whether or not someone else thinks our choices are good ones. It is none of their business. It's your life.

As for smoking, if someone else dislikes it, it's their right to not be around you or to create private locations where you are not welcomed. But I also think it is anyone's right to disassociate with anyone else for any reason... and that includes freedom of bigotry, racial, and religious exclusion, protected by law. It will mean some establishments have the right to not serve "your kind" (be they smokers, or of a certain race or sexual preference for example). But a free society allows that, and if it is a bad thing, those establishments will go out of business.

But that drastic example points out why this isn't allowed. Some people really don't understand what TRUE freedom and personal liberty really means, and they don't want to take the bad with the good. And you can't have it both ways.

Either we are a truly free society, or we are just living under an illusion and fooling ourselves, allowed our freedoms to be curtailed in a pick and choose manner.

Mostly because hospitals make billions of dollars using the machines, doctors make billions of dollars coming in to look at the person, and doctors and hospitals also make money with the drugs they give. If they let someone do a "mercy killing", then that money to doctors and hospitals would stop. Do you really think the AMA gives a damn about you? As long as they can make money, they don't care how much you suffer.

Women and doctors know more about their specific situation than some politicians who's only goal in life is to rake in as much money as they possibly can.

And the governement IS letting grown people decide.

Why do conservatives want the US to turn into China or N. Korea? (I couldn't help myself after seeing these types of questions ad nauseum)

Women in China have very little control over their babies, how many children they have, and what genders are allowed to be born.

Do you want the US to control birth rates like they do in China? I thought this country was a democracy?

thank you for a wonderful observation, it seems as if the gov, is using a double edge sword in this instance, but, have you thought how gov, wants to keep the people divided and fighting among them selves so they can do as they please, and don't forget the lobby's who want the same so you won't even know when you are being robbed, just think what would happen if our forefathers were here today, they would literally storm Washington and kill every one of those scum bags, gov, only has jurisdiction over 3 things by our constitution ,
Espionage, counterfeiting and interstate commerce, yet they have taken over our entire lives, and are robbing us of our hard earned dollar daily, but, our people are so busy fighting among them selves they don't even notice, and they keep voting for the same scum bags at every election, because they listen to our controlled news media, and don't even know what is going on.

Now that is a very interesting perspective...I agree that adults should be able to make the decision about assisted suicide, but never linked the issue with abortion before.

Because we have allowed it to get so big. Once that happens their egos go to their heads and they think they can do pretty much anything they want (because people still keep voting for them just because they are Republican or Democrat). Remember just say no to Big Government!

I am not sure I want the government involved in either. Both are wrong to me for a government to advance.
