How can u tell if an online recording company or talent agent is for real?

ask for references , check with the better business bureau,
if they have a real address instead of a post office box.

If a recording company is so good or an agent is so gifted at finding new talent then what are they doing advertising on the web?

Agreed they have to look somewhere but its not a good start is it?
