regular vacuuming, is probably the single biggest thing you can do to prevent carpeting from getting dirty. Also recomended is take you shoes off at the door, immediately clean any spills, and have your carpet cleaned regularly. Scotch gaurding your carpet is also recomended

In my home everyone removed shoes at the front door. We dont eat in carpetted areas of the house. Vaccum regularly. To remove odors from the carpet, sprinkle a box of bicarb soda on carpet. leave for a few hours then vacuum it up. It works better than any carpet deodorizer on the market.

When you come home...leave your shoes at the door and put on your slippers or house shoes on.. when you have guest as them to take their shoes off and have some extra pair of slippers on hand...Vacuum weekly. Steam clean once in awhile. Avoid eating or drinking where the carpet is but if you absolutely have to be extra careful to eat over a table with place mats...
Or if you are going to by new carpet Avoid light colored carpets.....
Good luck.
