you are right, you are an American. We are somehow a bit arrogant and call ourselves Americans, but we are citizens of the United States. Some people call us "North Americans", but Canad is also in North America. Ecuadorians are "South Americans", but there are many countries in South America.
Because of the length of the name for the country we adopted just America.

Why do you call yourself Ecuadorian? Because the name of you country is Ecuador. The name of their country is United State of America. What do you want them to call themselves? Unitetians? Statetians? The only word they can use is America, hence, Americans.

By continent, yes, you are American, or more specifically, South American.
The term "American" in relation to a citizen of the USA is really just a shortened form of an awkwardly large name for the USA's citizenry. You should not take offense, however. Our national identity does not include being an Ecuadoran. It is your nation of residence that identifies you, not your continent, unless you are Australian.
By your logic, Russians should be called Asians.

Because we are lazy, and saying "American" takes less time than saying "North American" or "citizen of the United States of America"

As English is generally spoken, you would be South American. Usually, American only refers to citizens of the USA. While I understand it doesn't make a lot of sense, it's still the way the word is used in general English.

Mostly because we don't have a name name.
What would we call ourselves?
At the time the name was chosen, there weren't other "countries" here, in the modern sense of that term.
So they chose United States of America.
So, what do you suggest?
I though Usans -- USA-ns, but that's just dumb.
Haven't come up with any better ideas.
We just don't have any other name to call ourselves.

Without knowing where you were born, where you grew up or where you live, there's no way to know what you are. I call myself an American because I was born in the US and I'm a citizen.

Other people call us that too, when I lived in Mexico I would tell people I was "estadounidense" and they would just blink at me and then say oh you mean "americano"
