This really pissed me off! My boss had a subordinate ask him if he could learn some things about big budgets by helping him.The boss granted him usage of the budget past and present and had him develop the budget for heating and cooling needs for the year. The subordinate went and accessed everyones pay rate, cause none of us talk about that stuff,it is personal.plus our pay rates are all over the place, some have been there thirty plus years and some new arrivals at only 1 year. Now the guy goes around laughing, taunting and bragging that he makes more than them.My question is ,Is this illegal or just unethical,I can't believe I find it hard to believe that this behavior would even be acceptable.I would really appreciate some input on this sensitive issue.

I do not feel that talking or divulging employees personal info is something to be used as a joke in the workplace.

I'm not sure of the legality of the situation, but I would head straight for the company handbook. Most companies strictly forbid such things in their company handbook with good reason. I've seen people fired for similar actions as his. You might want to talk to your HR department. Also, does the boss know he did this?

Employers don't want their employees communicating about wages. It tends to create a lot of anger.

Your only concern is yourself. If you think you are being paid fairly for the work you are doing and agree as such then continue to work and let that be that. If however with this increased knowledge feel you are being slighted you are justified in bring your concerns to your employer. Whether they decide to give you a raise or not based on this is irrelevant as long as you understand employment is volitional. If you don't like what you are making, quit.

The same thing happened at my friends work...they found it illegal...but I think only because in the contract she signed when she got hired there was something about not mentioning pay, and that it was grounds for termination...Her boss got fired cause of it.... I don't know if this helps...

The subordinate has shown he cannot handle confidential information. His career there is dead. Were someone who worked for me done that, he'd be history.
