I used almost every Operating system and the bests are Linux and Windows. Mac simply sucks because when you need a program or hardware or simple help, you cant simply find it in internet. On the other hand Linux and Windows have tons of free and commercial programs for every possible need and tons of help groups available.

No just buy the laptop of your choice, but before you do research every manufacture of laptops. check out their after sales service, this is the most important thing,, if you ever need it, not being able to get through to support is the most frequent complaint from users.
now for the operating system, the best way to keep the price of a laptop down is use the best operating system out there, which is Linux,, you can do more with linux than you can with Windows Vista, or the Mac OS/X systems,
Now you can either buy any version of linux and get support, for a round $80.00, or you can download a copy for free off the internet, you will get all the software you will ever need also free with it,
so just do a little research into Linux, and find out what's going on in the Linux world, it is a far more advanced system than Vista, or OS/X systems
places to search.....
Dell+linux
Hp+linux
ibm+linux
intel+linux
microsoft+linux
nasa+linux
novell+linux
just type any of the above into a web search bar and hit enter.. see what pops up
ubuntu is the easiest linux to use and install, along with suse linux, Dell are starting to preinstall ubuntu on their laptops and giving support
click on any of the links below for a copy of linux

I would suggest going to a Apple store and check out the new models that they have. Currently you can use a lot of the applications that use with the a regular PC. You might even end up buying the Mac, but again go and check them out. The store is designed for your to play with the product and ask the customer service people questions, very friendly. Including a question and how to session that Mac puts on for free at many of their locations.

it really depends on what you will be using it for and how much money you want to spend. if you are only going to use your laptop for e-mails and basic stuff, then stick with windows. macs are good as far as security, but they are so expensive. if you do end up getting a mac, i would research the model very extensively. there are some differences that can be hard to learn. good luck!
