Honesty and the suggestion of an alternative activity usually works best.
"Mom, I enjoy swimming but I don't enjoy competing at all. It really makes me ill to think about it! I'd rather just do swimming for fun. I think maybe in the fall I would like to try (insert new activity here: ballet, saxaphone, etc). Do you think we could try that and see how it goes?"
Having a backup activity shows your parents that you're not just being lazy and that you really just don't like competing. honesty is your best policy. They may want you to finish out the season; if this is the case, reaffirm your feelings for competing and stress how much you dislike it. Try not to lose your temper. If you have to swim in meets, just do it and get it over with for the season.
Good luck!

If you don't want to swim the meets then you shouldn't swim at all. Swimming without the meets like going to football practice without getting the chance to play your rivals ever in the season. With that said I believe you should consider quitting the team altogether but don't make a quick decision.
I just recently quit from the track team myself and I learned some good lessons from that even though I knew most of them beforehand.
#1: Make sure you're quitting for a good reason and not because you're lazy. If you're quitting because you just don't want to swim then I'd make you go to a weekend long meet and make you swim every day with your main swim being the 200 IM even if you never swam it before. I had to quit because track took up too much of my time, my step sister was in a bad car crash back in February and to this day is still in a coma, I had a much better future outlook with swimming than I did with track and I got sick of the kids and could make better friends on the swim team. If you have reasons for quitting similar to this then I'd say do it, you really don't want to put too much stress on yourself but if you just don't want to swim the meets and have no other excuses then get swimming!
#2: Make sure you have some sort of alternative exercise that you can do before you quit. When I quit track I was in the pool the very next day swimming with our USA Swim club. As long as you can stay in shape and not turn into a giant mound of saturated and trans fat then you at least have that going for you.
#3: Talk it over with people like your parents or other kids on the swim team or even the coach if possible. When I quit track I couldn't talk to the coach because he was always busy and didn't have time but I had talked it over with other kids on the team and with my parents. They all agreed that if I was unhappy with track that I should quit and I did. It was honestly very relaxing to quit and get it off my shoulders as well but without other peoples' input I probably would've come to an indecision on the issue.
Simply put: if you have legitimate reasons, alternative exercise and talk it over with other people then I'd say quit. You know you're unhappy swimming and you likely have other things you'd like to be doing so do them if you want to. It's what I did and ever since I quit track my GPA increased by 3 tenths anyways so there's another reason for quitting.

You have to ask yourself if you are on the swim team because you enjoy it or is it because your parents want you to do it? If it is not your passion and you hate it that much be tell your parents how you feel and then just swim for fun. You have to think about your own happiness.

im on the swim team too, and i dont enjoy the meets that much either. Well what i would say is that its great exercise to just do the practices....and if you HAVE to do the meets (i my team you just have to sign up for the ones you want to do) then finish out the season...wich mine is almost over...im not sure about your though. then dont sign back up and find something you enjoy more...skateboarding, dance, cheer, soccer, ext. tell them that you just are nott having much fun anymore, and thats supposed to be the whole point.

"Mom, I don't like going to swim meets and I'd prefer not too. Thinking about it makes me sick."
Try something like that.
