I am looking for Midwest locations of Redbelly Dace and Rainbow Darters. I would like to set up an aquarium with Native North American fish to teach my children and their friends a little bit about nature around us. I would also appreciate it if you know of any locations with nice longear pumpkinseeds. Some varieties have beautiful red chest markings. I live in the Chicagoland area though would be willing to travel a few hours if necessary.

I would suggest you contact the North American Native Fish Association http://www.nanfa.org/ from the website your local rep is :

Regional Representative
Uland Thomas
450 Longwood Dr.
Chicago Heights, Illinois, 60411
708-754-2833

Odds are very high they can point you to a member with the fish you want, probably nice strong hardy tank-raised fish at that. It should result in you getting better stock and far easier than attempting to collect them yourself.

I would also point out the most states have fairly restrictive laws concerning the collection of non game fish as well as specific methods you can use to collect game fish such as the pumpkinseeds. If you collect them yourself be sure to check with your local Fish and Wildlife Department concerning this.

Hope that helps.

I know you can seine redbelly dace and darters (not sure if they are rainbow or not) in many streams in wisconsin. you would probly have the best luck on the tributairies of lake michigan, also i have seen them in most of the trout streams in WI. earlier in the year before May they are shallower. as for pumpkinseeds, lake delevan would be a good start but they are in most lakes, but it will take you quite some time to pick through all of the other fish you catch before you hook into a pumpkinseed.
