The real difference is that "iPod" is Apple's brand name for their mp3 player.

An iPod is an mp3 player, as is Rio, which is just another brand name.

How much a player holds has little to do with who made it... Your player has a capacity limit, same as an ipod, and the only real difference is that Apple spent a fortune attempting to corner the market, and it worked. There are many accessories out now for the ipod, and some of them will work with your player as well. Mp3 files average about 4Megs each depending on length of the song and conversion quality, so you can figure on getting about 250 songs per Gig of storage space. "Better" doesn't depend on the label, but on how it works for you...You got tunes, that's the most important thing...and you may find later that yours can do things and go places that don't work so well with an ipod. The newer and larger ipods are boxy (like a Volvo), and pretty heavy considering everything else is evolving toward lighter and smaller. I use 3 players, and mostly the ipod doesn't leave the house because it's so bulky (and too expensive to risk dropping it in the street), and my smaller players go everywhere. Give it a little time, and your new player may grow on you.

For the 100th time, lets get this straight people. And this is directed toward the answerers not the questioner.

Ipod IS an mp3 player! It's just the Apple brand name. Just like maytag is a brand of refrigerators and Honda is for cars.

Persoanlly I would stay away from the Ipod because is WAY overpriced and is no easier to use than any other mp3 player in my opinion.

The ONLY thing it has over other mp3 players is games. So if games is what you're looking for then Ipod would be the answer. Anything else and it's not

Ha! You need to realize that ipod is a brand, and that it essentially is just another mp3 player. Same thing as asking whats the difference between a Mac and a computer. Do you see the analogy now?
