My son was 13 years old when my wife took him along to renew her driving license. The clerk asked her if she wanted to become an organ donor. My son asked what that meant and they explained it to him. He stated the that is something he would definitely do should he reach an untimely demise.
Less than a year later, he was struck by a speeding van and died 12 hours later. The question was asked of us about donating his organs. We recalled his statement and honored his request. Patrick's gift of life became the answer to the prayers of four families that dreadful day in 2005.

I was blessed to have shared some of my short time on Earth with him.

I recently wrote a song about his gift and I will share it with you. http://www.mediamax.com/imaprospecter/Hosted/The%20Gift-FemaleVocal.mp3

My brother-in-law use to love Star Wars (the old ones). He had a "Wickett" (one of the little ewoks) stuffed toy when he was a kid. His house burned down when he was little, and they lost everything. A couple years ago I found an original "Wickett" doll at a Goodwill. I washed it and wrapped it up for a Christmas present. He loved it. He said it was the greatest gift he ever received. He actually had tears in his eyes. When one of his friends comes to the house, he has to show them "what his sister-in-law got him for Christmas" It made me feel good that he liked it so much because he's really hard to shop for. On the other hand, it's gonna be even harder to find him something he'll like. I dont' think I could ever top it.

I took a friend who was always there for me when I needed an emergency ride to the veterinarian or to assist me in the burial of a feral struck down by a careless driver to a stage production of "CATS!" Greatest gift he gave me was providing a home for an abandoned Siamese dumped in my colony by the family member whom inherited her estate and the two of them and our friendship aged well.

The greatest gift I received was my life - thanks, Kyoko! Materially, I'd have to say it was my Zojirushi rice cooker, because that thing cooks the hell out of rice.

The best gift I have ever given? That'd depend on how my recipients felt, wouldn't it? The most expensive was a few thousand bucks, but I have no way of knowing if it was really appreciated.
