What type of mud? Is it a North American species or an African species? I have eastern muds and they don't seem to like deep water. If the water is going to be higher than they can stretch their heads to the surface, provide a ramp or rock pile to the surface - they'd rather climb to the top than swim to the top.

A 30 long or a 40 breeder is a good size tank for a mud. A 55 is too tall. Other than the water depth, treat the tank as you would for a slider. Hiding spots are a good idea for any turtle - either artificial silk plants or underwater caves.

Muds lile Reptomin pellets, insects, earthworms and other invertebrates, and even occasional greens. Mine have a preference for water hyacinth.

I had one for a long time. It shared a tank with 4 sliders and a soft shell turtle. ALL loved to lie on the rock and sun themselves, ALL swam all over the tank. And ALL chased after the food, pushing each other out of the way to get to the food.
