You can always format a drive and load XP back onto it if you have the software (or just put your old hard drive into the new machine, fix all the drivers, and then wipe out the new one and use it as a data drive).
I can't think of a reason that you would need XP for work - Vista does all the same stuff. I never recommend someone upgrading to it (especially if they have an older machine) but if you buy one with it on it, you might want to give it a shot before you make up your mind.

If you buy from Dell, theyre still allowing people to select XP for work purposes. Otherwise itll be tough but not impossible to downgrade back to XP from Vista. (Costly though).

When you purchase a computer, it need not have Vista on it unless it says so. You can buy a Windows XP computer brand new.

Nothing will stop you as long as you have a copy of XP that you can legally install. You'll need to format and start fresh.

You can always downgrade, but you may have to throw money at it.
Your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing
it with one of:
http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org
Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to
viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they're
all free.
