A bikini is usually just a small triangle of fabric that ends well below the navel. A hipster covers a little more, (higher up) rides just below the hip bones and may cover the navel or just barely expose it.
Look at this site: http://www.landsend.com/pp/ProductFinder.html?appCode=2&filter=0_593,59&filter=1_237&expand=0&expand=1&expand=COLOR&sid=4840132300607161312

the first suit (the black one) is a hipster, by my definition, although they call it a bikini. The second one (light blue) is more a bikini.

Lands End is a great place to shop for swim suits, because they have many many styles, and they help you decide which one is right for your body type and level of activity. (some suits only look good and stay put if you are sun bathing---if you try to SWIM in them, they ride up, slip down, or just plain fall off!)

A "bikini" is a 2-pc swimwear. A bikini can be high-cut, low-cut, thong, or hipster.
Tell her to go with the hipster, that's "in" right now.

your friend should get a hipster because of her height it will make her look slim, but if she does decide to get a bikini it would probably make the bottom of her swim suit look like granny panties, so tell her to go with the hipster
