I would like to start a small clothing boutique. I am currently attending college and have a full time job so I would like to start it out on the internet and hopefull one day move into a real location. I would like to sell western wear and have a couple of brands I am intreseted in selling. My problem is I am not sure where to start and the best way to go about it. If anyone who has started there own business could give me some insight on how they went about it I would surely appreciate it. Thank You.

I started my first business in 1988, my second one in 1995 and most recently my online store in 2005, it is a home decor, promotional marketing business online. You do not need alot of money or need to pay an attorney, the SBA or anyone else. In fact I wrote a manual on how to get started for women just like you.
Starting and managing a business takes motivation, desire and talent. It also takes research and planning. Take the time up front to explore and evaluate your business and personal goals. Then use this information to build a comprehensive and well thought out business plan that will help you reach these goals. The process of developing a business plan will help you think through some important issues that you may not have considered yet.
Before starting out, list your reasons for wanting to go into business. Next you need to determine what business is "right for you." Then you should identify the niche your business will fill. Conduct the necessary research. The final step before developing your plan is the pre-business checklist. You should answer these questions:
What business am I interested in starting?
What services or products will I sell where I am located?
What skills and experience do I bring to the business?
What will I name my business?
What equipment or supplies will I need?
Go to your local Department of Revenue Center or on the Internet and look for it, it has a different web address in every state. Just google them. Then either pick them up or download the papers to get your business license. If you walk in, it is instant if you file online it may take 6 weeks to get it. You can also check to see if the name you have choosen is taken. The cost varys from state to state and city to city. $35.- $125. Mine was $65. When you have a retail (or wholesale) license, you can get the website. The Department of Revenue will help you decide what kind of license you need. For starters many websites are free with a shopping cart. Or you can pay for some good ones that have shopping carts as well. Most are pretty easy to add items to the site or you can get someone to help you. GOOD LUCK and I say, "Just go for it!"

If you're in college, then your school probably has resources that you should be using. Do they teach business courses? Talk to some of the faculty. Consider TAKING some business courses
At the very least, visit the library and check out what they have there---there must be many many books on the subject in a college library. This site is the WRONG place to seek advice like this. Go to the experts.

I am a business owner providing tax, bookkeeping and accounting services for the past 15 years. I also work with economic development groups and help clients who want to start their own business. Daddy'O has a great idea. Start with the SBA. You can find a Small Business Development Center operated by SBA who can help you in a variety of ways.

Paul, start with asking of yourself: For approximately five years, can I reside in a million room, make my possess meals, hardly ever devour out, make each nickel rely, be OK with all my garments coming from the Thrift Store, no highly-priced toys, holidays within the local park, can I inform the change among what I desire and what the trade demands. Unless you will have plenty of cash stored up ( plenty ), that is how it's going to be.

call the SBA.
They can hook you up with all sorts of stuff like how to write a business plan, etc.
Many locals have a mentorship program.
my best to you.
