The boats been abandoned for about a year now. Its stuck in some weeds by the shore of a lake by my house. I've been checking on it for about a year and no one has moved it. Do you think I could claim it and take it and use it for myself?

I recieved a call similar to this when I was in the Coast Guard. You need to get the Hull Identification number and take it to the local DMV where all boats are registered. Explain what you have found and ask them what the proper procedures are for claiming this boat. If the DMV has no records contact the nearest Coast Guard Marine Safety Office and they should be able to help. Good Luck.

I not sure where you are, but, actually it considered salvage. You may want to contact your local Coast Guard or Police Department for the details in claiming salvage rights.
One of the rules of boating in the Ocean. Should you ever need a tow, you give the tow boat "Your" rope. You let them tie on with their rope and if they not good people you may find your boat just been salvaged.
May sound crazy, but, the ocean a lot different than on a lake.

it is not a sturdy concept. We did that once. an extremely long term in the past. somebody left a boat on a trailer sitting off the line close to our living house, and it sat there for a pair of months. We desperate to repair the flat on the trailer and take the boat to the lake. It sank, and we had to swim for it. there's a reason that is been deserted.

No you need to report it to the police. Even if it is abondoned it would still be stealing.
